Schengen-wide effect of an Austrian entry ban

An entry ban imposed under section 53 FPG becomes visible through the Schengen Information System to the authorities of the other Schengen states. The entry can stand in the way of entry to these states, not just of return to Austria. An ordinary trip into the Schengen area is therefore as a rule not possible while the ban exists.

The duration of the effect is guided by the duration of the entry ban set in the decision. Anyone seeking clarity about the reach should consider the decision and the entry together.

If there is an important reason for entry, another Schengen state may in exceptional cases permit entry or a residence title despite the alert. A consultation procedure between the states involved is provided for this. It weighs whether the entry stands in the way of entry.

If the effect in the Schengen area is to cease permanently, the route runs via the entry ban itself. If it is lifted or shortened under section 60 FPG, the alert in the SIS must be adjusted or deleted accordingly. The Schengen-wide effect thus ends as soon as the ban ceases.

Check whether circumstances have changed since the ban was imposed. That is often the starting point for an application to lift or shorten it.

Travel to states outside the Schengen area is not covered by the entry in the SIS. The Schengen-wide effect of an Austrian entry ban is limited to the network of Schengen states. Other states have their own entry requirements that have to be observed independently.

Keep in mind that the ban continues for return to the Schengen area. A trip outside it does not change that.
