A new passport, name change or different spelling does not remove an entry ban. The measure attaches to the person and the underlying decision, not merely to an old document number.

In the Schengen context, a data check may still be useful. The aim is not to bypass controls, but to correct inaccurate or outdated identity data.

This article explains the difference between a new document, correction of wrong data and lifting the underlying entry ban.

01 Question 1

What has changed?

A new passport or different name does not automatically change identity in the proceedings. The underlying decision and stored data matter.

Overview of all answers.

01

Organise documents and chronology first.

The legal assessment depends on the decision, service, previous steps and concrete evidence. Without that basis, the review stays too general.

Sort the documents by date and evidence topic. This shows which point is already supported and what is still missing.

02

The procedural status determines the next step.

Whether an application, appeal or preparation makes sense depends on the current status. The operative part, duration, service and earlier decisions matter.

Only then can it be assessed whether section 60 FPG, Article 8 ECHR, a NAG issue or SIS correction is central.

03

Fast clarification prevents wrong turns.

If the situation is unclear, rushed steps can cause harm. This applies especially to travel plans, new applications, passport data or voluntary return.

A short legal review helps separate a safe course from mere assumptions.

Why the ban does not disappear automatically

An entry ban is based on an official decision. A new passport does not change that decision. A name change also does not make the underlying decision disappear.

Anyone planning to travel should not infer free entry from the new document. Duration, scope and any Schengen SIS alert are decisive.

The basic effect is explained in the article on the Schengen-wide effect of an entry ban.

When SIS access and correction matter

If name, date of birth, alias data or document number are stored incorrectly, correction may be possible. Concrete evidence and a precise description of the error are needed.

That is different from lifting the entry ban. Correction fixes data. Section 60 FPG concerns the underlying ban.

The existing article on SIS deletion and correction explains that path in detail.

Correct data instead of concealing identity

A new passport must not be treated as a way to bypass an existing bar. That is risky and can create further problems. Transparent data reconciliation is the safer approach.

Old and new passport, name-change documents, the decision, proof of service and any SIS indications are relevant.

If you do not know what is stored, consider a SIS access request through the data protection authority.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions on this focus.

Does a new passport lift the entry ban? +

No. The entry ban attaches to the person and the decision. A new document does not remove the measure.

What should be done after a name change? +

The change should be evidenced by documents and compared with the stored data. If SIS data are wrong, correction may need review.

Can someone simply travel with a new passport? +

No. Before travel, it should be clarified whether the entry ban or a SIS alert still has effect.
